History of Pocahontas

Did you know that Pocahontas was the daughter of Wahunsunacock who was the chief leader of the Powhatan Indian tribe? Pocahontas father was called Powhatan which was a title given to him.

It is believed that Pocahontas was her fathers favorite child and that gave here a certain rank in the family and the tribe. In the Powhatan society women could inherit power but Pocahontas could not because inherit power because it was matrilineal. Because of this the young Indian girl could not obtain her fathers power.

Powhatan had lots of wives and would send them away after they would give birth to a child. No one knows if Pocahontas’ and her mother had equal status in the tribe.
